How to read the Altcoin Season Index (for beginners)
- 1Look at the number75 or more = altcoin season. 25 or less = Bitcoin season. In between = no clear winner.
- 2Remember it is a comparisonIt does not say prices go up. It says who did better: altcoins or Bitcoin.
- 3Check the coin listSee which coins are leading. A season led by one sector (for example memecoins) can end fast.
- 4Watch Bitcoin dominanceWhen Bitcoin dominance falls, money is usually moving into altcoins.
- 5Altcoins swing harderAltcoins usually rise more and fall more than Bitcoin. Size your trades smaller.
- 6Check the mood tooCombine it with the Fear and Greed Index. Altcoin seasons often come with greed.
How Kumo calculates it
For each day, Kumo takes the 90-day price change of each of the 49 altcoins it tracks and compares it with Bitcoin's. The index is the share that did better, from 0 to 100. Prices come from Binance, OKX, Bybit and Hyperliquid daily closes (UTC). The coin list is the same 50 large coins used across Kumocast; stablecoins are not included.
Altcoin Season Index FAQ
What is the Altcoin Season Index?
It shows what share of big altcoins did better than Bitcoin over the last 90 days, on a scale from 0 to 100. Kumocast compares the 49 altcoins it tracks (no stablecoins) with Bitcoin.
When is it altcoin season?
When 75% or more of the altcoins beat Bitcoin over 90 days (index 75 or higher). When 25% or fewer beat Bitcoin (index 25 or lower), it is Bitcoin season. In between, neither side clearly wins.
Is it altcoin season right now?
The live answer and the number are at the top of this page, recalculated every 30 minutes from exchange prices.
When was the last altcoin season?
Every altcoin season in our data is listed on this page under the history chart, with its start and end dates.
Why 90 days?
A 90-day window is long enough to ignore a few lucky days but short enough to show the current trend. It is the window most altcoin season indexes use.
Which coins are included?
The 49 altcoins Kumocast tracks, from Ethereum, XRP and Solana to memecoins such as Dogecoin, Shiba Inu and Pepe. Stablecoins are not included because their price does not move.
Does altcoin season mean every altcoin goes up?
No. It only means most of them did better than Bitcoin. In a falling market, altcoins can "beat" Bitcoin simply by falling less.
