How to read a crypto heatmap
New to heatmaps? Here is everything you need, in about two minutes.
A crypto heatmap squeezes the whole market into one picture. Instead of reading fifty prices one by one, you see fifty boxes at once. Each box is one coin, and each box tells you two things: how big the coin is, and what its price did.
1. The size of the box = the size of the coin
By default, a box is as big as the coin’s market cap. Market cap is the price of one coin multiplied by how many coins exist, so it is the total value of that coin. Bitcoin is by far the biggest, then Ethereum, then coins like XRP, BNB and Solana. If we drew the boxes at their true size, Bitcoin would cover most of the screen and the small coins would be specks, so Kumo softens the sizes a little to keep every coin readable. You can also size the boxes by 24-hour trading volume – how many dollars of the coin changed hands in the last day. Big volume means lots of people are trading it right now.
2. The colour of the box = the weather
- Sunny (green): the price went up 1% or more in the last 24 hours. Dark green means up 5% or more.
- Cloudy (grey): the price barely moved, less than 1% up or down.
- Rain (blue): the price went down 1% or more.
- Storm (dark blue): the price fell 5% or more. A lot of storms means a rough day.
On the 7-day and 30-day maps the lines move out a little (2% and 10% for a week, 3% and 15% for a month), because prices travel further over longer times. The colour key under the map always shows the lines for the time frame you picked.
3. Read the big picture first
Before you look at any single coin, look at the whole map. Is it mostly green or mostly blue? That is the market’s weather. Count the sunny boxes – Kumo does this for you in the weather report next to the map, for example “34 of 50 sunny”. This count is called breadth: how many coins share the move. A rise where almost every coin is sunny is broad and healthy. A rise where only Bitcoin is sunny and everything else is rainy is narrow.
4. Then look for the odd ones out
A single dark-green box on a rainy map, or a storm on a sunny map, usually means news about that one coin – an upgrade, a listing, a hack or a big unlock of new coins. Tap the box to open its chart and see whether the move is new or part of a longer trend. Use the group buttons to compare meme coins, DeFi, AI coins and big layer 1 blockchains: groups often move together.
5. Switch the time frame
The 24-hour map is the noisiest: a lot can happen in one day and it often reverses. The 7-day and 30-day maps show the trend. If a coin is rainy today but sunny for the month, it is having a cloudy day inside a good month. If it is rainy on all three, it has been weak for a while.
Remember: the heatmap shows what already happened. It does not say what happens next, and it is not advice to buy or sell anything.
How to use the crypto heatmap
- 1Pick a time frame24 hours is live and updates every 30 seconds. 7 days and 30 days show the bigger trend.
- 2Choose the box sizeMarket cap shows which coins are biggest. Volume shows where the trading is happening right now.
- 3Filter a groupShow only meme coins, DeFi, AI coins, layer 1s or exchange tokens to see which corner of crypto leads.
- 4Tap a coinEach box opens that coin’s live chart. All charts are in the charts section.
Data: prices from Binance, OKX, Bybit and Hyperliquid (24 hours live every 30 seconds; 7 and 30 days from daily prices). Market cap and volume: CoinLore free public API. Coins without a market cap number get the smallest box.
Crypto heatmap FAQ
What is a crypto heatmap?
A crypto heatmap is a picture of the whole crypto market on one screen. Each box is one coin. The size of the box shows how big the coin is, and the colour shows whether its price went up or down. On Kumocast the colours are weather: sunny green for up, grey clouds for flat, blue rain for down and dark blue storms for a big drop.
How do I read the crypto heatmap?
Look at the colours first: lots of green sunny boxes means most coins went up, lots of blue rain means most went down. Then look at the biggest boxes – Bitcoin and Ethereum – because they move the whole market the most. Small boxes are smaller coins, which often move much more in both directions.
Can I see a 7-day or 30-day crypto heatmap?
Yes. Use the time frame buttons above the map to switch between the last 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days. The 24-hour map updates live every 30 seconds; the 7-day and 30-day maps are worked out from daily prices every 30 minutes.
Is there a meme coin or altcoin heatmap?
Yes. Use the Group buttons to show only meme coins, DeFi, AI coins, layer 1 blockchains or exchange tokens. Every coin except Bitcoin is an altcoin, so the full map is also an altcoin heatmap. To see whether altcoins as a group are beating Bitcoin, check the Altcoin Season Index.
Why are some boxes bigger than others?
Box size follows the coin’s market cap (price × coins in circulation) or, if you switch, its 24-hour trading volume. We soften the sizes a little so that small coins are still big enough to read – otherwise Bitcoin would fill most of the screen.
Does a green heatmap mean I should buy?
No. The heatmap only shows what already happened to prices. It does not say what will happen next, and nothing on Kumocast is advice to buy or sell. Use it to understand the mood of the market, then do your own research.
