What each indicator means (in plain words)

You don’t need to learn them all. One line each, so the table above makes sense. A “candle” is one bar on the chart covering one time period, such as one day.

  • SMA (simple moving average)The average closing price of the last N candles. SMA 50 = the average of the last 50 days on the daily chart. Price above it = the trend is up for that period.
  • EMA (exponential moving average)Like the SMA, but recent candles count more, so it reacts faster to new moves.
  • RSI (14)Compares the size of up moves with down moves over the last 14 candles, on a 0–100 scale. Above 70 = bought very hard, below 30 = sold very hard.
  • MACDThe gap between a fast (12) and a slow (26) average. When it is above its own signal line, momentum is turning up.
  • Stochastic and Williams %RWhere today’s price sits inside its recent high–low range. Near the top of the range or near the bottom.
  • ADXHow strong the trend is (not its direction). Above 25 = a strong trend; below 20 = the market is drifting sideways.
  • CCIHow far the price is from its usual level over the last 20 candles. Above +100 or below −100 = unusually far.
  • Momentum (10)The percentage change over the last 10 candles. Positive = price is higher than 10 candles ago.
  • Pivot, R1 and S1Levels worked out from yesterday’s high, low and close. The pivot is the middle line; R1 is a level above it (resistance), S1 a level below it (support).

Technical analysis for beginners: 6 steps

  1. 1Start with the trendIs the price above or below its 50- and 200-day averages? Above = uptrend, below = downtrend.
  2. 2Check momentumRSI and MACD tell you if the move is gaining or losing strength. Learn more on the Bitcoin RSI page.
  3. 3Mark the levelsWrite down the nearest support and resistance. They are where decisions happen.
  4. 4Compare time framesWhen the 4-hour and daily agree, the picture is clearer. When they disagree, be careful.
  5. 5Plan your riskDecide where you are wrong before you enter, and size the trade with the position size calculator.
  6. 6Remember the limitsIndicators look at the past. News can change everything in minutes.

Bitcoin technical analysis FAQ

What does Bitcoin technical analysis show today?

The summary at the top of this page counts how many of up to 17 classic indicators point up (buy), down (sell) or neither on each time frame, refreshed every 30 minutes. The tables show every indicator and its value.

What is technical analysis?

Technical analysis studies price and volume charts to judge the trend and momentum of a market. It does not look at news or fundamentals – only at what the price has done.

Which time frame should I use?

Short-term traders use 30 minutes and 4 hours. Swing traders use daily. Long-term investors use weekly. When all time frames agree, the picture is clearer – it is still not a forecast.

What do "buy" and "sell" signals mean here?

They are mechanical readings: for example, price above a moving average counts as a buy signal. They are not personal advice and are often mixed. Think of them as the market’s weather, not a forecast.

What are pivot points?

Levels calculated from yesterday’s high, low and close. Many traders watch them as possible turning points for the day: R1 and R2 above, S1 and S2 below.

How is this different from the Bitcoin price prediction page?

This page lists every indicator on four time frames. The Bitcoin price prediction page turns them into Kumo’s forecast with targets, ranges and a track record.
