How to read RSI (for complete beginners)

RSI is one of the most popular indicators in the world. Here's all you need.

  1. 1It goes from 0 to 100RSI measures whether recent moves were mostly up or mostly down. 50 is the middle.
  2. 2Above 70 = overboughtPrice has been bought very hard. It can keep rising, but the move may be getting tired.
  3. 3Below 30 = oversoldPrice has been sold very hard. A bounce is possible, but in a crash RSI can stay low.
  4. 4Pick your time frameDay traders watch 30-minute and 4-hour RSI. Long-term investors watch daily and weekly.
  5. 5Look for divergenceNew price high but lower RSI high = the push is weakening. It works the other way at lows.
  6. 6Combine itUse RSI with price levels on the Bitcoin page and the market mood in the Fear and Greed Index.

How RSI is calculated

Step 1Average gainAverage size of the up moves over the last 14 candles.
Step 2Average lossAverage size of the down moves over the same 14 candles.
Step 3RSI = 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + gain ÷ loss)Wilder smoothing, the standard setting.

Bitcoin RSI FAQ

What is the Bitcoin RSI right now?

The live readings for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, daily and weekly are at the top of this page. They are recalculated every 30 minutes, and the chart moves with the live price.

What does RSI mean?

RSI stands for Relative Strength Index. It compares the size of recent up moves with recent down moves and turns that into a number from 0 to 100. Above 70 is called overbought, below 30 oversold.

Is Bitcoin overbought or oversold?

Look at the time frame you care about. Short time frames (30 minutes, 4 hours) change fast; the daily and weekly RSI describe the bigger trend. Each one has a weather label on this page.

What is a good RSI to buy Bitcoin?

Many traders watch for RSI below 30 as a sign that selling may be overdone, but in strong downtrends RSI can stay low for weeks. Our history table shows what happened after past oversold readings – it is not a guarantee.

What RSI setting does Kumocast use?

The classic 14-period RSI with Wilder smoothing (a way of averaging where older moves slowly count less), the same setting most charting platforms use by default.

Why is the weekly RSI different from the daily RSI?

Each candle covers a different amount of time. A week of mixed days can still be a strong up week, so the weekly RSI moves slower and shows the long-term mood.

What is RSI divergence?

When the price makes a new high but RSI makes a lower high (or the price makes a new low but RSI a higher low). It can be an early sign that a move is losing strength.
