How funding works (in plain words)
A perpetual future is a contract that follows a price and never expires. Funding is what keeps it honest.
If more traders want to bet on a rise, the contract’s price drifts above the real price. To pull it back, longs pay shorts a small fee – positive funding. If more want to bet on a fall, the contract slips below the real price and shorts pay longs – negative funding.
The fee is a percentage of your position, paid every 1, 4 or 8 hours depending on the venue. 0.01% every 8 hours sounds tiny, but it adds up to about 11% a year – and on hot coins rates can be 10 times higher. That is why Kumo shows both “per 8 hours” and “per year”.
You only pay or receive funding while your position is open at the moment of payment. It is paid between traders, not to the exchange.

What is a funding rate?
Perpetual futures are contracts that follow a coin’s price and never expire. To keep their price close to the real price, traders on one side pay the other side a small fee every 1 to 8 hours. That fee is the funding rate. When it is positive, traders betting on a rise (longs) pay traders betting on a fall (shorts). When it is negative, shorts pay longs.
What is a normal funding rate?
Most big exchanges use a base rate of 0.01% every 8 hours, which is about 11% a year if it never changed. Bitcoin and Ethereum often sit right at that number. Rates far above it mean many traders are betting on a rise with borrowed money; negative rates mean more are betting on a fall.
Why does the same coin have different funding on different exchanges?
Each exchange has its own traders, its own formula and its own payment schedule (every 1, 4 or 8 hours). If most traders on one exchange are long, its rate rises while another exchange can stay calm. Kumo converts every rate to the same “per 8 hours” and “per year” scale so you can compare them fairly.
What does negative funding mean?
Shorts pay longs. It usually appears when many traders bet on a fall, often after a sharp drop. It is a picture of positioning, not a prediction – prices can keep falling with negative funding, or bounce.
How often is this page updated?
Every 15 minutes, straight from each venue’s public data. Hyperliquid, Lighter and dYdX pay every hour; most exchanges every 8 hours, and some coins every 4 hours. The “next payment” times on each coin page come from the venues, or from their fixed hourly schedule.
Are the venue links on this page affiliate links?
No. The venue names link to each exchange’s own website. Kumocast is not paid for them and does not recommend one exchange over another.
Why does dYdX often show 0%?
dYdX has no built-in base rate, so on quiet markets its funding sits at zero, while most exchanges add a base of 0.01% every 8 hours. Hyperliquid’s stock, gold and forex perps use half the crypto base, about 5.5% a year. These differences are normal and explain many of the “gaps” between venues.
